Taking the ACT with writing will provide you and the schools to which you have ACT report scores with additional scores. You will receive a total of five scores for this test: a single subject-level writing score reported on a range of , and four domain scores, also , that are based on an analytic scoring rubric. The subject-level score will be the rounded average of the four domain scores. An image of your essay will be available to your high school and the colleges to which you have ACT report your scores from that test date. Taking the writing test does not affect your subject area scores or your Composite score.
An ACT score report includes scores for each of the four subject area tests English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science and all associated subscores which are calculated separately. The first step in calculating a score for a subject area test is to determine the raw score for that test. The raw score is equal to the number of questions answered correctly on that test there is no penalty for incorrect answers. Then, the raw score converted to a scaled score between 1 and 36 using a metric that takes into account variations in difficulty among different test administrations. The Composite Score is the average of the four subject area test scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. Fractions less than one-half are rounded down; fractions one-half or more are rounded up.
Students can opt to take the ACT with a writing component to showcase their reasoning and critical-thinking skills. But what is considered a good score? More importantly, how do colleges and universities evaluate a ACT writing score? Is it really worth the extra effort and time for students? These are excellent questions to serve as a guide.
As students probably know, on the four ACT test subjects: Math, English, Reading, and Science, they will receive a scaled score between 1 to The average of these four scores will then be computed to get your composite score. These figures will be shown on students result reports.
