In demographics , the world population is the total number of humans currently living, and was estimated to have reached 7,,, people as of March [update]. The global population is still increasing, but there is significant uncertainty about its long-term trajectory due to changing rates of fertility and mortality. Six of the Earth's seven continents are permanently inhabited on a large scale. Asia is the most populous continent, with its 4. Africa is the second most populated continent, with around 1. Estimates of world population by their nature are an aspect of modernity , possible only since the Age of Discovery.
The world population has grown tremendously over the past 2, years. In , the world population passed the six-billion mark. Humans had been around for tens of thousands of years by the year 1 A. It hit the billion mark in and doubled by While the Earth can only support a limited number of people, the issue is not so much about space as it is a matter of resources like food and water. While data is collected on population growth, it is difficult for even sustainability professionals to understand what will happen on a global scale when the world's population reaches 10 or 15 billion people. Overpopulation is not the biggest concern, as enough land exists.
Population, Policy, and Politics: How Will History Judge China’s One-Child Policy?
The one-child policy was part of a program designed to control the size of the rapidly growing population of the People's Republic of China. Although it was introduced in , by Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, it was enforced in after a decade-long two-child policy. Thus, the term "one-child policy" has been called a " misnomer ", because for nearly 30 of the 36 years that it existed — , about half of all parents in China were allowed to have a second child. To enforce existing birth limits of one or two children , provincial governments could, and did, require the use of contraception , abortion , and sterilization to ensure compliance, and imposed enormous fines for violations. Local and national governments created commissions to promote the program and monitor compliance.
Contestants are invited to answer a population-related challenge, with their own experience and insight guiding their ideas for a solution. Contests are open to high school seniors, as well as currently-enrolled college undergraduates. Winners will receive a designated scholarship amount, paid towards undergraduate tuition at the accredited college or university they attend. As we continue our mission to inform U.
