Participatory action research PAR is an approach to research in communities that emphasizes participation and action. It seeks to understand the world by trying to change it, collaboratively and following reflection. PAR emphasizes collective inquiry and experimentation grounded in experience and social history. Within a PAR process, "communities of inquiry and action evolve and address questions and issues that are significant for those who participate as co-researchers".

CBPR is an umbrella term that encompasses a variety of research methodologies, including participatory research, participatory action research, feminist participatory research, action research, and collaborative inquiry.
The ethical implications of conduction of research ventures without properly defined values or ethical process allows for the risk of breakdown of research structures and possible legal sanctions. On the other hand, words can work between the researcher and the participant in a shared way. Just as words are a bodily experience for the participant, they are for the researcher as well.
